I am a car guy. I have worked in the auto service industry all of my life. I started at a gas station while in high school. Back in those days the local gas stations did it all. We sold tires, did mechanical repairs, provided towing and yes, we even cleaned windshields. It was a great place to begin because it showed me how important personal service could be.
When I started college my schedule was more flexible so I took my basic mechanical skills to our local new car dealership. It was tough at first as I was exposed to some of the emerging technology. You see it was at this time when widespread emissions systems and electronic engine controls were first being introduced. I quickly learned that I wasn’t alone. Even the ‘old timers’ in the shop were struggling. It was all new. I started carrying the shop manuals with me. I would study them between classes (sometimes even during class). I attended the manufacturer’s training. My desire to learn soon paid off as I became the top mechanic in the shop. Working at the Dealership showed me how important technical expertise was to the art of car repair.
